Clogged garbage disposal sink
A blocked disposal side is usually food packed in the drain below the unit. Cut the power before you do anything else.
What is the disposal side doing?
Water sits in the disposal basin
Switch the disposal off and unplug it or turn off its breaker before anything else. Block the other basin, then plunge the disposal drain with water over the nose.
The disposal hums but won't turn
A humming motor is usually jammed, and plunging won't free it. Cut the power and follow the disposal maker's steps for a jam, then plunge if water still stands.
Step by step
Cut the power
Switch the disposal off, then unplug it or turn off its breaker.
Block the other basin
Put a stopper or a wet rag in the second drain and hold it down.
Plunge the disposal drain
With water over the nose, work 10 to 15 firm strokes.
Restore and run
Turn the power back on and run cold water with the disposal for half a minute.
